"The history of the 1965 genocide is your [Indonesia’s] history. For that reason, we are giving our film to you on September 30, the anniversary of the start of the atrocities," stated Joshua in his official press release.
Jagal is a documentary that captures the terrifying and gruesome moments of the massacre of those accused of being members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) from the eyes of Anwar Congo, a former ticket checker at a movie theater who then became one of the slaughterers of thec alleged communists.
Anwar said he had a special technique he used to slice the throat of PKI members and avoid blood from splattering all over the ground. The Elvis Presley and James Dean fan proudly admitted he used to kill while dancing the cha-cha.
"I wiped out the PKI happily," he said.
Since its release last year, Jagal has won numerous awards, including two from the 2013 Berlin Film Festival in Germany, one from the Sheffied Documentary Festival in the UK, one from the Biografilm Festival 2013 in Italy, Grimstad Short and Documentary Film Festival in Norway, and the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival 2013 in Scotland.
