TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the 1980s, heavy metal was considered to be a transformation of rock 'n' roll which stands out for its speed, volume, and power. In orderto distinguish themself from other heavy metal bands, Metallica decided to step their music up to speed.
Regarding Metallica's playing, Katon DePena, a member of a 1980s heavy metal band 'Hirax', says "playing fast is cool, but you also have to be able to make great riffs, and that what makes Metallica awesome."
Making music about violence, freedom, fantasy, and independence, combined with rebelious attitude, the band continues to gain fans and followers. During their early years, Metallica always considered that gaining fans is more important than gaining money. Nevertheless, their first album 'Kill 'em All', which was releasedin 1983, was quite sucessfull.
Using the same formula, the band recorded their second album 'Ride the Lightning' in 1984. 'Ride the Lightning' contains songs about nuclear weapons, death penalty, suicide, war, and religion.
