TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahmad Junaidi, spokesman for the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), said the KPPU will take legal action if it finds cartel practices behind the price surge of staple food, he told Tempo, Sunday, July 14.

The KPPU had deployed a team of inspectors to investigate the significant increase in prices of staple foods such as meat, chicken, eggs and onion. The move was taken because the prices rose consistently and at a high level, whereas the government had claimed that there is sufficient supply.

If they do not find any cartel practice and find that the price increase was due to unfavorable policies, the KPPU shall submit recommendations to the Government.

According to Ahmad, the team of inspectors will carry out an intense monitoring as long as prices remain high.
