Jokowi Agrees on Allowances for Freelance Teachers
Rabu, 3 Juli 2013 18:26 WIB
TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The Jakarta administration will give allowances to freelance teachers in Islamic schools. 3,300 teachers will receive Rp1 million allowance in addition to their monthly payments. In Indonesia, teachers in public schools usually hold status as civil servants. However, freelance teachers do not hold the status and their payments are counted per hour.
"Freelance teachers from other schools have received allowances, teacher's welfare in our region is the best compared to others," Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said on Wednesday. Jokowi – the governor's nickname – further added that he had made the decision. "I have decided, and I have told all related entities."
Jokowi said that there are around 5,900 freelance teachers in Jakarta. However, he could not give any promise to promote their status to be civil servant. "The decision lies on the central government, not me."
