TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Megawati Sukarnoputri has agreed torelease six lobbyists from the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) who had beenarrested by the Indonesian Military (TNI). "In principle, President Megawatiagrees to the release of the GAM lobbyists who had met a deadlock duringnegotiations," Coordinating Minister for Political and Security AffairsSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono commented from his office this afternoon (20/8).
However, the President reminded the freed lobbyists that they must notviolate the Indonesian law. The President has suggested that thenegotiations must be protected and respected as a process. Therefore, thegovernment has agreed to release the lobbyists after they have fulfilled theterms set out by the police.
As reported, on July 20 police had arrested six GAM lobbyists, includingTgk. Nashiruddin ben Ahmed, Amni ben Marzuki and Amdi ben Hamdani from theJoint Committee of Security Modality (KBMK), Teuku Kamaruzzaman from theJoint Committee of Humanitarian Action (KBAK), Tgk. Muhammad Usman LampohAwe from the Joint Committee of Democratic Consultation (KBKD), andNasrullah Dahlawi from the Monitoring Team for Security Affairs. However,Nasrullah was later released. On Friday, August 3, police from a MobileBrigade unit arrested the GAM spokesperson for the KBMK.(bernarda rurit/mis)
