TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:MPR Speaker Amien Rais reminded the economic team under the leadership of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti not to let the interest of national economy be controlled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or any other foreign capital. Amien Rais made this statement to the press at the legislature complex in Jakarta today (13/08).
Amien stated his support for the new economic team. He expected the team to operate carefully in this increasingly global era and to prevent foreign interesst from controlling the national economy. According to Amien, globalization will bring with it greater competition, where the stronger parties will survive and the weak will be left behind. “Our economy is weak. Therefore, I want to remind our economic team not to be carried away by the IMF. The IMF is still the IMF. They might see our interest from another point of view,” Amien said.
Nevertheless, Amien admitted that the IMF still plays an important role as an international financial institution which Indonesia does need for support, particularly in the context of the current economic development in this country. According to Amien, Indonesia’s economic team must remember that the IMF is an international financial institution dominated by western powers.
