TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Non-active National Police chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro ordered all police chiefs to provide security for the holding of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Special Session. The orders were issued during the National Police general staffs meeting led by Bimantoro at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta this afternoon (04/07).
Bimantoro ordered all police chiefs to detect any movements supporting and opposing the special session and to eliminate rumors within society saying that the session is aimed at toppling President Abdurrahman Wahid.
National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Didi Widayadi explained Bimantoro's orders to the press following the National Police general staffs meeting. According to Didi, the speeding up of the session is just a matter of schedule. “The police have not interfered with the schedule. Still, we are ready to provide security for the holding of the special session,” he stated.
