TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Yogyakarta branch of the Indonesian Journalists Alliance (AJI) and the Southeast Asean Press Alliance (SEAPA) have filed charges against the Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief, the National Police Chief and the chief of detectives at National Police HQ. Daniel Panjaitan, the lawyer for both organizations, filed the charges at the South Jakarta District Court on Monday (17/2). Daniel said AJI and SEAPA filed the charges in connection with the killing of Fuad Mohammad Syafruddin alias Udin, a reporter of the Bernas Daily, on August 16, 1996. So far, the case has not been solved and thus it is not safe for journalists to work. They have not been serious [about solving the case]. Up to now, the Udin case is still unclear, Daniel told reporters after filing the charges. The accused are considered to have not tried to summon or instruct Adjunct Inspector Police Edy Wuryanto to be questioned at the Military Police Office in Yogyakarta. Edy Wuryanto is one of the suspects who is still to be brought to a Military Court in Yogyakarta. Besides, Daniel said, the case has claimed a life and inflicted a great loss. Therefore, AJI and SEAPA are demanding immaterial compensation of Rp1 billion and Rp3 million to compensate material losses. AJI demanded Yogyakarta Military Police to summon Edy Wuryanto -- who is stationed at the National Police Headquarters -- soon. (Nunuy Nurhayati-Tempo News Room)
