TEMPO Interactive, Banda Aceh :Army Chief of Staff Gen. Endriartono Sutarto officially reopened the Iskandar Muda Military District in Naggroe Aceh Darussalam Province this morning (5/2). The military district headquarters is located on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Simpang Lima, Banda Aceh. This is the former site of the 012 Teuku Umar military command post. Sutarto inaugurated Brig. Gen. Djali Yusuf as the Chief of the Iskandar Muda Military District. The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) kept the ceremony secretive because the Wanjakti (a council dealing with the recruitment of high-ranking military officers) is still deliberating. Even this morning the Indonesian Military (TNI) spokesperson Ismet Herdy was reluctant to explain the nature of the opening in any detail. “Just wait and see,” he said. Meanwhile, Chief of the National Police Gen. Da’i Bachtiar said the security system would not change with the establishment of this new military command. “In principle, [the security system] will not change,” Da’i said from his office today (5/2). The Police Chief simply stated that the military district would support the police in maintaining security throughout Aceh. Bachtiar clarified that the two institutions, the national police and the military, would be led by separate commanders who would coordinate security approaches together. The National Police will be commanded by the Commander of Security Recovery Operation, whilst the TNI would be headed by the Chief of Security Recovery Operation.
