TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:European Union (EU) delegates express their concern over the conflicts in Maluku which have lasted for more than two years. Were very concerned about the situation in Ambon that has forced the society to live in refugee camps, head of EU delegation Harald Sanberg said in a meeting with Maluku Governor Saleh Lattuconsina, and all regents and mayors in Maluku last night, February 20, at the Governors residence in Mangga Dua, Ambon.

The concern emanated after the delegates visited the strife-torn city of Ambon accompanied by Minister of Settlement and Regional Infrastructure Erna Witoelar. According to Sanberg, EU has agreed to pay serious attention to the re-construction of Maluku province.

Sanberg said that EU would not interfere any problem that occurred in the region. EU will only give assistance to the Indonesian government in order to settle the conflicts. For this purpose, EU has prepared a US$ 50 million donation which will be used to re-build all public facilities destroyed by riots.

The Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia also said that EU would use its two-day work visit to seek solutions for the Ambon conflicts. This is necessary in order to re-build Ambon city, practically in ruins today.

This is the second visit to Ambon by an EU delegation. The first was in October 2000 to monitor the ongoing conflicts.
