TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Amien Rais has criticized the US government for its plan to attack Iraq and is demanding that the Indonesian government not be a coward in its response to the US political stance. The US government wants to attack Iraq not because of the UN resolution. The US government has three reasons in attacking Iraq. And I condemn the action should it be carried out, Rais told reporters at the legislature complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (29/01). The first motive is economic, according to Rais, because the US plans to occupy Iraqi oil fields as a stepping stone for taking over all oil fields in the Middle East. The second motive is a political motive, meaning that the US government intends to use Iraq in forcing its interest on the Middle East. The third motive, said Rais, is to facilitate Israel in obtaining more freedom and this will make it easier for the US government to expand into the Middle East. Rais considered the government as not being firm in responding to the US governments plan to attack Iraq. Our government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, must issue a firm stance in this matter. Dont act cowardly, stated Rais. He said he agreed with the evacuation of Indonesian citizens in Iraq. According to several experts, US President George W. Bush will continue his plan to attack Iraq rather than having to lose his face by canceling the attack, said Rais. (Andi Dewanto-Tempo News Room)
