TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:If the government failsto reach the income target set for the sale ofState-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) through privatizationin 2001, it will cut the salary of cabinet ministersand members of the House of Representatives (DPR). State Minister of State Enterprises Laksamana Sukardimade this statement to the press after attending aseminar entitled “Business Opportunities Post WTCTragedy in the Era of AFTA-APEC” held at the BorobudurHotel in Jakarta this afternoon (12/11).

Laksamana said, ”We have to stop the developmentbudget from increasing. To do that, we have to makesacrifices ourselves. The salary of cabinet ministersand DPR members must be deducted. We, the stateofficials, must set a good example for the people.”

Laksamana added that the targets for BUMNprivatization represents a very important aspect ofthe 2001 State Budget. Should the government fail toachieve the set targets, they would have to revise thebudget. The revision on the budget would, in turn, bring about wide-scale impacts on many other budgetagendas.

The present budget draft lists an income target fromBUMN privatization at Rp 6.5 trillion for the year2001, but so far the government hsa not yet attainedthis target. Numerous problems have hamperedgovernment efforts to sell the shares of several stateenterprises, as can be seen in the case of PT SemenGresik and Cemex.
