High Court Sentences Akbar Tandjung to 3 Years in Prison

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Akbar Tandjung, Chairman of the Golkar Party and Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), was sentenced to three years in prison, having been found guilty of embezzling Rp40 billion of Bulog (State Logistics Agency) funds. Chief of the Justice Court, Ridwan Nasution, announced this at the High Court on Friday (17/1). This verdict strengthens a previous one issued by the Central Jakarta District Court on September 4 under which Akbar was also sentenced to three years in prison. The High Court sentenced Dadang Sukandar and Winfried Simatupang to three years in prison, instead of the previous sentenced one and a half years in prison. According to the Justice Court, Sukandar--who was the chairman of Raudhatul Jannah Foundation--and Simatupangwho distributed the aidwere proved guilty of using the states funds for their own benefit. The justice court ruled that the three suspects were proved guilty and each of them was sentenced three years in prison and to a fine of Rp10 million or three months imprisonment. However, the justice court did not order that the sentences be carried out at once. After the trial, the justice court denied to make any comment to the press. (Wahyu Dhyatmika-Tempo News Room)
