TEMPO.CO, Medan - The National Search and Rescue Board (Basarnas) announced, after an extensive joint operation, that they have finally identified the final resting place of the KM Sinar Bangun ferry boat that capsized in Lake Toba.

“[The two recovery options are] currently being discussed in today’s meeting. We have found the target but are still looking for a way to retrieve the boat,” said Budiawan, Head of SAR office in Medan today, June 29.

Budiawan explained that the first option is to retrieve the capsized boat despite the prolonged time. The second option is to let go of the victim’s bodies to remain at the Toba Lake and honor the deceased by spreading flowers over the lake.

He further explained that the second option arose after considering many elements, such as the harsh terrain and the depth of the lake that can potentially endanger the SAR personnel.

“It will be further discussed with the Basarnas, District Officials, and relatives of the deceased,” Budiawan explained. Today marks the twelfth day of the KM Sinar Bangun evacuation process.

The KM Sinar Bangun evacuation team is equipped with an ROV, trawls assisted by two evacuation vessels, added with the newest equipment that can clear the images from the ROV that is commissioned to Lake Toba’s radical depths.
