TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The sound of the entire second-floor hallway collapsing at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) Meizanin Tower 2 was heard up to the ninth floor. The loud sound it created caused people to assume that there was a bomb that went off at the building.
National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto put an end to the public assumption that developed right after the incident.
“It collapsed at 12:20 p.m. We assure you that the collapsed Meizanin floor was not caused by an explosion,” said Setyo on Monday, January 15, at the scene.

Setyo explained that all of the victims have been evacuated and rushed to the nearest hospital. However, police have not yet released the exact number of victims struck by the collapsed floor.
“The victims have been taken to the Siloam hospital, Pertamina hospital, and other hospitals nearby,” he said.

IDX consultant Setiaji (45) recalled that the hallway on top the main lobby collapsed during lunch time. “There were many victims, perhaps dozens,” he recalled.
Setiaji said that the IDX hallway is often used by people, meanwhile, employees often gather at the space underneath it. “Many did not have the time to escape and ended up buried under the debris,” said Setiaji.
