TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) responded to the request submitted by the e-KTP graft defendant Setya Novanto in becoming a justice collaborator.
“We hope so,” said KPK Deputy Chief Basaria Panjaitan at her office on Wednesday, January 10.
KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said that his office will need to further study Setya’s request. He explained that there are several points that need to be considered regarding the requirements to become a justice collaborator (JC).

The first thing is that a JC must first admit his/her crime. A Justice Collaborator must also be willing to openly provide truthful information of the involvements of other alleged suspects, either intellectual actors or other types of involvement to a certain case. And, the main suspect of a crime cannot be turned into a JC.
A suspect who has turned into a Justice Collaborator, according to Febri, will be handed less severe charges. JC is also eligible for a clemency and other inmate rights.
“We must first analyze whether a person can become a JC or not. This will surely take time and consistency,” said Febri.
Setya Novanto is charged with Article 2 and 3 No. 31/1999 on corruption with a maximum sentence of life to 20 years in prison. Setya’s lawyer asked that KPK provide a guarantee for the safety of his client once he turns into a Justice Collaborator.
