TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has taken to Twitter to wish Merry Christmas. “To all Christians in Indonesia, I wish you a Merry Christmas,” he tweeted in the account @Jokowi. “The diversity of religious groups in Indonesia is a blessing for us.”
Christmas celebrations in regions across Indonesia are generally safe. Jakarta Cathedral, for example, saw thousands of Christians attended the Christmas mass on December 24.

Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin has also wished a Merry Christmas to Christians in a press statement received by Tempo on Dec. 25. “To joyful Christians, Merry Christmas. Let’s spread peace to others. Peace on earth, peace in our heart.”
The United Development Party politician said that Christmas is a moment for Christians to revisit the essence of religion that treats humans like humans.
