December Inflation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suhariyanto said that October`s inflation rate stands at 0.01 percent, which is far lower than September`s 0.13 percent. The figure brings the inflation rate 2.67 percent so far this year.

“It proves that President Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla’s administration is committed to maintaining the economic stability,” Suhariyanto told journalists at the BPS office in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 1.

Suhariyanto explained that the inflation was caused by commodity price hikes. Food, beverage, cigarette, and tobacco saw an inflation of 0.28 percent that contributed 0.05 percent to the inflation rate.

Several commodities that saw an increase in prices included red chili, rice, noodle, kretek filter cigarette, electricity, and university tuition fees.

“Red chili and rice prices that increased by 0.05 percent and 0.04 percent had the most impact on the current inflation rate,” the BPS head revealed.

Meanwhile, commodities such as broiler chicken, red onion, air tariff, fish, garlic, potato, tomato, beef, cayenne pepper, and broiler chicken egg saw a deflation. Suhariyanto added that as many as 44 cities experienced an inflation while 38 others saw a deflation.

Of the cities contributing to the inflation rate, Tual experienced the highest inflation rate at 1.05 percent with the consumer price index of 155.24. The lowest inflation occurred in Surakarta and Cilegon that stands at 0.01 percent with consumer price indexes of 124.65 and 136.75, respectively.
