TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - City bus service Transjakarta offers free rides on Indonesia`s Independence Day on August 17.
“It’s a request [from Jakarta Governor Djarot] for Indonesia’s 72nd Independence Day; I can’t say no,” Transjakarta CEO Budi Kaliwono said yesterday, August 16, in Jakarta.
Budi Kaliwono said that free services apply in all Transjakarta corridors. He said that passengers can enjoy the offer from 5 am to 12 am. “It’s some kind of a surprise for residents,” he said.

On the Independence Day holiday, Budi Kaliwono said Transjakarta will be operating 70 percent of buses that operate on normal days. He reasoned that passengers will mostly be visiting tourist attractions on holidays. He added that the buses will primarily serve routes heading to tourist attractions in Monas, Ancol, and Ragunan, among others.
The request to offer free rides on Independence Day was conveyed by Governor Djarot during the unveiling of Transjakata corridor 13 Cildeug-Tendean routes. Jakarta city council speaker Prasetio Edi Marsudi later suggested free services in all corridors.
