Tangerang Mayor Claims Garbage Bank Success

TEMPO.CO, Tangerang-Tangerang Mayor, Arief Rachadiono Wismansyah said that garbage management program relies on public involvement in zero waste system through garbage banks.

"In 2008, we were the second dirtiest city in Indonesia, Now, we have twice earned Adipura Kencana," Arief told Tempo on Wednesday, October 7.

Arief spoke as a keynote speaker in the Climate Week Event by the Environmental Ministry, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday.

In his speech, Arief speaks of garbage management in Tangerang, notably through 1,000 garbage banks program, with up to 350 facilities.

Moreover, the policy has resulted in a decreasing amount of garbage in the final dumping facility. Therefore, Rawa Kucing final dumping facility in Tangerang now has a cleaner and green edge.

"We call it the final processing facility. It is equipped with a park, soccer field, and lake for students to learn about garbage management," said Arief.
