TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo announced on Friday, January 16, 2015 that the government has set a new price for the 12 kilograms LPG canister at Rp 129,000 per canister, Rp 5,700 cheaper from the previous Rp 134,700. The new price will be applied starting on Monday, January 19, 2015.

Jokowi said that the price reduction was in line with the declining global oil price. Jokowi added that the reduction is expected to lower prices of basic necessities.

"We need to disseminate this information so that all ministers, governors, regents and mayors would help to lower prices for people's interest," he said.

State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina confirmed that they are aware about the government's plan to lower the price of 12 kilograms LPG canister.

"The government has provided us with an instruction to lower the 12 kg LPG canister price," Pertamina Marketing and Commercial Director Ahmad Bambang told Tempo on Thursday, January 15, 2015.

However Pertamina did not expected that the government would reduce the price by Rp 5,700 per kg. Bambang said that the state oil company had proposed to lower the price by Rp 3,600 per kg, adding that it would provide an equal amount of profit after the recent price hike on January 2, 2015.

Bambang added that prices for the 12 kg LPG canister should not be adjusted in accordance with the declining world crude price. Bambang argued that the previous price had caused the company to lose profits.
