TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of The Center of Limnology Research Center for Indonesia's Science Institution (LIPI) Gadis Sri Haryani, said that there is a new land mass discovered just 2 kilometers off the coast of Sederhana Beach, Bekasi, due to sedimentation.
She said that it was a natural process that was caused by a river's current after the flood yesterday. "It was river sediment that was carried over to the sea, and also moved sand to the middle of the sea," she said.
Gadis said that the high intensity rain that occur in the last few weeks had caused the river upstream to carry over solid materials that will gather a few kilometers from the beach.
The phenomenon was discovered by fishermen from Bekasi. The land mass is predicted to be 2 kilometers long and 15 meters wide. It is currently becoming a local attraction for the locals, which can reach the newly formed island in just one hour by using a small boat.
