TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 2010 Mount Merapi eruption had been a blessing in disguise. Residents who live in the impacted areas have received dividends for sand deposits that they have. Cumulatively, one household can receive up to Rp 15 million. "The mining process is handled by respective villages," said Ruswantoro, Wukirsari Village secretary, in Sleman on Sunday, June 16.
Without having to become sand mining operators, the residents impacted by the eruption are still eligible for results of the mining activities. Ngepringan village in Wukirsari, for instance, still has remaining cash of Rp 350 million from the mining.
There are three locations for sand and stone mining in Wukirsari: Ngepringan, Gungan, and Srodokan. The total amount received by 150 household is around Rp 2.25 billion.
