TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police has commenced the 2018 Zebra Operation starting today, Oct. 30, until November 12, 2018, said Traffic Police Chief Sr. Comr. Yusuf.

Zebra Operation is an annual road operation conducted by the National Police Traffic Corps aimed at regulating and taking action against traffic violators in Indonesia.

“As many as 1,670 personnel are deployed,” said Yusuf in Jakarta Metro Police headquarter, South Jakarta, Tuesday, Oct 30.

According to Yusuf, the operation would target drivers who committed fatal violation such as driving under influence, not wearing a helmet, and overloading vehicles.

“It does not mean we will not taking action against other violations. But those violations lead to the accident are our top priority,” said Yusuf.

All regional police would conduct the Zebra Operation. In 2017, Jakarta police recorded 2,097 traffic violations. The figure decreased from the previous operation in 2016 at 2,960 cases. The death toll in 2017 also declined by 67 percent from 649 to 388 people in 2016.

However, the number of traffic violators increased to 1,069,541 in 2017 or rose 200 percent from previously in 2016 amounted to 356,101 violators.

During the 2018 Zebra Operation, Yusuf continued, the police would pinpoint the operation site in a bid to prevent traffic congestion.

“For example, if there are slow and fast lanes, we will start the operation in the slow one. We will not carry out the operation in every lane if the road is jammed,” he explained.
