Lombok Still Experiences Numerous Aftershocks Until This Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Lombok region in West Nusa Tenggara continues to experience low intensity aftershocks following the deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Sunday, August 5, that killed 108 people.

According to field observation, the aftershocks could still be felt today on 10:11 Central Indonesian Time (WITA), which caused people panicking to flee their houses and other buildings.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through its official Twitter account, the magnitude 4.9 aftershock epicenters 14 kilometers offshore of Northwest of Lombok at the depth of 12 kilometers which was also felt in Mataram and Karangasem.

“There was yet another earthquake just now,” said Yaya, a Mataram resident to Tempo on Wednesday, August 8. The quake could be felt for three seconds and was able to shake the local hotel ceiling lights.

Chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Willem Rampangilei said that the Lombok earthquake death toll up to Tuesday, August 7, has risen to 108 deaths; “Meanwhile, the number of injuries amounted to 134 people,” he said.

Furthermore, Willem explained that 50 people that were hospitalized have undergone surgery from the total of 87 patients. Most often, medics are still faced with large amount of cases where patients are still traumatized of staying indoors, afraid of the aftershocks.
