TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government, through the Trade Minister will attempt to take on the opportunity created by the trade war between the United States and China to boost export and to improve the country's foreign exchange reserves.
Trade Minister Enggartiato Lukita said that Indonesia can take advantage of the trade war by filling in the absence of import commodities from both countries and replace it with domestically produced goods.
"Filling in for the absence of China and United States product in accordance with domestic products, also there are opportunities that can be taken in China related to the absence of American products," Enggartiasto said on Friday, August 3, 2018.
Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the United States has started to apply high tariffs against imported goods from China. China retaliated by reducing its purchase of United States products.
The trade war presented an opportunity for Indonesia to fill in the absence of products both in China and United States. In addition, Indonesia needs to boost export in an attempt to strengthen foreign exchange reserves.
