TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Being single or having a partner is a choice. In the modern era, women are free to choose whether to be single or have a family. More and more women decide not to get married despite pressure from the society.
Cited from Livestrong and The Talco, there are reasons why women do not want to get married.
1. Focusing on their career
A woman on the verge of success or is already successful and financially stable will feel that having a husband has little benefit. Having an equally successful husband may feel like a dream come true. But such a couple may not be able to spend time with each other or maintain their marriage healthy.
But if a woman marries a man who makes less money than her, problems may arise in the future. Women’s success usually makes them more independent of their husband.
2. Afraid of heartbreak
If you are ready to love, you should be ready to be hurt. Some women choose not to get married for fear of being cheated. They don’t want to waste their time on it. Besides, a short-term relationship is easier to manage than having to fight for and be in a state of uncertainty in a long-term relationship.
3. Lack of commitment
Marriage requires commitment between both parties for a long-lasting relationship. Time says that around 25 percent of millenials—those born between 1982 and 2004—decide not to get married. Most of them do not want a traditional, committed marriage. While others opted not to get married as they refuse to commit to one person or an institution.
4. Freedom
Marriage is often seen as a shackle that takes away one’s freedom, particularly women, in traditional patriarchal societies. Therefore, modern women tend to be single for more freedom. By staying single, a woman can decide what best for her life.
