TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UNICEF Indonesia renewed its appeal for more support from the public towards the ongoing relief operations in Nepal.
"1.7 million children are directly affected. Many have lost family members and friends, their houses are destroyed and now in the aftermath of the catastrophe, they are at risk of disease and further suffering," said UNICEF Indonesia Representative Gunilla Olsson.
Olsson also thanked individuals, companies, and governments worldwide that have extended their hands in making donations, including Indonesia. However, Olsson admitted that larger donations are needed to expand the relief efforts in an attempt to provide more benefits for many other children.
UNICEF's emergency operation has managed to reach thousands of children and their families, and provided them with urgently needed supplies and protection. To date, more than 200,000 people have gained access to clean water and almost 25,000 people can enjoy sanitation and hygiene facilities. UNICEF and its partners had also established 38 Child Friendly Spaces for displaced communities in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur serving over 3,300 earthquake affected children.
