TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia has confirmed that it has expelled a number of German and Polish diplomats from within its' borders on Monday, November 17, 2014.
"The Polish government is engaging in an unfriendly behaviour based on an unfounded assumption - as such, Russia has responded with an adequate and appropriate measure," stated Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, as quoted by Xinhua.
According to the Ministry, the Polish diplomat has since left Russian soil.
Both Moscow and Warsaw has yet to speak on the exact number of diplomats that were expelled by Moscow - although local media reports suggest that three Polish military attachés and a political envoy was affected by Kremlin's move.
On Friday, November 14, 2014, Moscow gave the diplomats 48 hours to leave the country.
Previously, Warsaw had cancelled a string of Russo-Polish cultural events slated for 2015, and more recently it revoked the working permit and accreditation of a Russian journalist based in Warsaw.
On Saturday, November 15, 2014, Russia also expelled a German female diplomat for an undisclosed 'unfriendly behaviour' against an unnamed Russian official. Moscow has refuted claims that the deportations are linked to recent media reports on the upcoming visit by Germany's MInister of Foreign Affairs, Frank Walter Steinmeier.
Relationship between Russia and the states which forms the 'meat' of the European Union (EU) has dipped to an all-time low over the unresolved conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow has repeatedly stated that it does not play a role in breakdown of peace and order in Ukraine.
