TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 800 police officers secure the Corruption Court and the Eradication Corruption Commission (KPK) building in Jalan Rasuna Said, South Jakarta. Since Wednesday, September 24, police officers in uniform guarded the two buildings which are located close to one another.
The Corruption Court held a trial at 2pm with an important agenda, which is the verdict towards defendant Anas Urbaningrum, former Chairman of the Democrat Party.
“This is our preventive step to secure the trial,” Head of Sabhara Division of South Jakarta Resort Police, Kombes Siswono, told Tempo inside the court building.
The deployed Police personnel are from Sabhara, Internal Affairs, Car Brigade and Setiabudi Police Precinct, including from the traffic unit. “Until now (11:30 am), 148 personnel are in standby at the Corruption Court,” Siswono said in a statement.
They are anticipating mass movements supporting Anas, such as from the Islamic Student Association (HMI) and Indonesian Coalition Movement. Hundreds of sympathizers of Anas are predicted to attend the trial.
Anas’ attorney, Firman Wijaya, said that his client is ready to face the verdict. “Anas is in good shape,” Firman said.
Anas Urbaningrum will hear the verdict from the judges concerning the corruption case and money laundering that involves him. Anas is charged up to a 15-year imprisonment and for his political rights to be revoked also.
