TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 21 people were killed and 126 injured on Tuesday when a Moscow subway train derailed during the morning rush hour. Of the 136 people hospitalized, 42 were in critical condition.
Rescuers managed to recover seven bodies, while attempting to extract 12 more trapped in two wrecked train cars. Fox News reported that over 1,100 people were evacuated from the train, which was stuck between two stations, in a rescue operation that ended more than 12 hours after the accident.
In video released by the Emergency Situations Ministry, some wrecked train cars looked almost coiled, occupying the entire width of the tunnel. Rescuers attempted to force open the mangled doors of one car to retrieve bodies.
Upon the accident, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin told reporters that "unnamed officials will not only be fired but also charged with crimes." The Moscow Metro is one of the most famous subway systems in the world, known for its luxurious interiors.
