TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will open a direct flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam beginning May 30, 2014. Garuda Indonesia president director Emirsyah Satar said Garuda would operate the direct flight as it was now part of the Sky Team global alliance, which it joined on March 5, 2014.
“Amsterdam will become a new gate for Garuda passengers willing to continue their flights to beyond-Europe destinations, particularly to the 1,064 destination cities in 178 countries around the world, which are served by Sky Team members,” he said in a press release dated Tuesday, March 18, 2014.
Garuda will fly the route with its latest Boeing 777-300ER, which is able to fly to up to 15 hours or cover a total distance of 14,490 kilometers non-stop. Presently, the state-owned airliner serves the Jakarta-Amsterdam route with a transit flight to Abu Dhabi using the Airbus A330-200.
According to plans, the Jakarta-Amsterdam route will be connected to the airliner’s latest international route, London Gatwick, effective September 8, 2014. Thus, the Jakarta-London route will later be extended to Jakarta-Amsterdam-London.
