TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Jogja-NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Asian Film Festival, or simply JAFF 2013 has launched three books on cinema at the Indonesia – France Institute in YogyakartaWednesday.
These books are Krisis dan Paradoks Film Indonesia (Crisis and Paradox of Indonesian Films) by Indonesian director Garin Nugroho and media analyst Dyna Herlina S; Malaysia Cinema in a Bottle: A Century (and a Bit More) by Malaysian author Hasan Abd Muthalib; and Untuk Apa Seni (What is Art For) by Indonesian philosopher Bambang Sugiharto.
JAFF president Garin Nugroho said his book covers the tendency to the format, production method, distribution and appreciation of films. It describes the journey of films from 1900 to 2012.
"This is linked with economic, political, artisitic and popular cultural conditions in Indonesia," said Garin.
Hasan Abd Muthalib discussed the development of film in Malaysia from the year 1930 to 2000 in his book. He featured a number of different movie posters from different eras in various genres, such as horor, teen and sexual films. However, he said Malaysian films also raised serious issues in its cinematic features, such as politics, the economy, racial diversity, developing cultures and religion.
On a separate note, JAFF will discuss the challenges of the art market in Indonesia today with sources such as Amir Sidharta, Hikmat Darmawan, Garin Nugroho and Hanung Bramantyo.
