TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - SOE Minister Dahlan Iskan said he agrees with the plan to converse Merpati Airline's debt in a bid to save the state-owned company. According to Dahlan, this can be done through restructuring; converting Merpati's debt into equity.
As reported earlier, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa said that the coordination meeting to discuss the fate of the state-owned aviation company came up with several options to save it, one of them is debt conversion.
According to Hatta, the government's opportunity to save Merpati is still open because Indonesia is witnessing a growth in flight services. There are still many flight routes that are not available. Merpati, he said, can tap into that market.
Dahlan said the option should first be discussed with the House of Representatives. "We have not been to the House because the government must agree on it first," he said.
