TEMPO.CO, Surakarta - The mystery shrouding an ancient bunker at the Surakarta City Hall complex has started to unravel. A number of workers managed to find the entrance to the bunker, a colonial remnant assumed to have been a shelter.
The bunker, made of 40-centimeter thick walls, has two entrances. The building is quite large, about 15 meters long and nearly 5 meters wide. At the center of it there is a thick wall partition wall. And on the roof there are a few holes believed to function as air ventilation.
The excavation process of the bunker was carried by workers of the Central Java Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency (BPCB). A number of military personnel were also present to assist.
Mufti Raharjo, head of the heritage department of the Surakarta administration, said the bunker is presumably a part of a defense system, "because the complex was a vital object owned by the colonial government,” he said, Monday, November 11.
For said reason, Surakarta Mayor F.X. Hadi Rudyatmo said he purposely cooperate with the military (TNI) to assist with the excavation process. Rudyatmo said he is worried there are still remnants of war weapons left.
