TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia's Economist, Lana Soelistianingsih, predicted a potential deflation in the September inflation data. "One of the supporting factors for the deflation is the price of food material which had been controlled through increasing import activities by the government," Lana told Tempo on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.
Today, Central Statistics Agency (BPS) is scheduled to announce inflation data for September. In August, inflation reached 1.12 percent with big impacts from Ramadan month and the homecoming period.
Lana said that potential deflation in the past September was also supported by the increase of subsidized fuel oil price which gave neutral impact. "Because it is already the second month of the increase," Lana added. Besides that, Lana opined that Bank of Indonesia also had a role in pressing the inflation in September. "The increase of BI rate helped in strengthening rupiah despite the temporary decline in mid-September," she said.
