TEMPO.CO, Washington - The United States will send four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt this week, US officials told Reuters news agency on Wednesday, July 10.
Egypt is the second largest country to have received aid from the US military after Israel with a value of US$1.5 billion. "The delivery of the four jets is part of a military aid package," said a US defense official who chose to remain anonymous.
Pro-Morsi Islamic groups condemn the United States for their silence of an action that they call with a military coup, since Morsi was a freely-elected President.
The Egypt military and the interim government said that the pro-Morsi Muslim Brotherhood have committed violence when Egyptians took to the streets in protest of president's policies.
"We will continue to follow and evaluate how the Egyptian authorities handle the ongoing situation," said White House spokesman, Jay Carney.
An unnamed US official said that US has sent Egypt $650 million in the form of military aid for the fiscal year of 2013--which ends in September 2013. The remainder of the aid worth $585 million is still on hold.
