December 31, 2025 | 04:15 pm

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 3.7 tectonic earthquake shook Aceh Jaya and surrounding areas on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Authorities reported no damage.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the tremor occurred at 01:28 PM WIB (Wester Indonesia Time).

Hendro Nugroho, Head of BMKG Region I, said the epicenter was located offshore at a shallow depth, at coordinates 3.97° North Latitude and 95.92° East Longitude.

Based on its location and depth, the earthquake is classified as a shallow quake, triggered by movement along the Great Sumatran Fault, one of the region’s most active fault lines.

“The earthquake is a shallow type caused by activity on the submarine segment of the Great Sumatran Fault,” Hendro said in a written statement.

Residents in Aceh Jaya reported feeling the tremor at an intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this level, vibrations are perceptible to people indoors and can cause light hanging objects to sway.

BMKG continues to monitor the region closely. As of 02:17 PM WIB, no aftershocks have been detected. Authorities urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and follow official updates from BMKG channels.

The agency emphasized that public vigilance and accurate information remain crucial to prevent unnecessary panic during such natural events.
