TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As Indonesia enters the busy year-end holiday season, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) offers a valuable tool for travelers: the Digital Weather for Traffic application.
This app allows the public, especially those using ground transportation, to check real-time weather conditions along long travel routes.
Real-Time Weather Updates
According to Guswanto, Deputy of Meteorology at BMKG, the app provides weather information based on radar and satellite data, updated every 10 minutes.
“It can cover all destinations by pinpointing locations down to the sub-district level throughout Indonesia,” he explained on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
The system delivers nowcasting weather alerts, including rain warnings and travel-time estimates for selected routes. Users can also check train routes in addition to road travel.
Tempo tested the application for a trip from Senen, Central Jakarta, to Tayu, Pati, Central Java. The app issued a Rain Alert for four road sections along the route and estimated a travel time of 7 hours 17 minutes.
BMKG detected rain in approximately 8 percent of the monitored road sections, including light rain in areas such as Kramat II Road in Central Jakarta, the Demak-Kudus Highway, Kudus-Pati Highway, and the Main Route in Pati.
The app also advises travelers to reduce vehicle speed during rain, which can add around 20 minutes to travel time.
How to Use the Digital Weather for Traffic App

Choose the car icon for road travel or the train icon for train routes.

The app will display weather information along the route, including radar or satellite imagery. Rain warnings and affected road sections appear in the same display alongside estimated travel time.
BMKG’s Digital Weather for Traffic app is a practical tool for travelers during Indonesia’s rainy season, helping ensure safer and more informed journeys as the year comes to a close.
