TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.6 magnitude tectonic earthquake shook the South Coast of North Bengkulu on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 07:22:32 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), as reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). No tsunami threats are issued after the tremor.
The Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, said the epicenter of the earthquake was located offshore at coordinates 5.60 S; 102.19 E, 29 kilometers southwest of Enggano Island, North Bengkulu, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake was considered shallow due to subduction plate activity," said Daryono in his official statement on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
Analysis of the source mechanism indicated that the earthquake had upward or thrust fault mechanism. "This earthquake affected and was felt on Enggano Island with an intensity scale of III MMI, where the vibration was noticeably felt inside homes, akin to a truck passing by," he said.
Meanwhile, the earthquake vibrations were felt in Kaur and Bengkulu with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, where the vibrations were noticeably felt inside houses. "The modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he added.
Until 8:10 a.m., BMKG monitoring showed two aftershocks, at 07:57 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.7, at 5.51 S - 102.31 E coordinates with a depth of 18 kilometers. Minutes later, at 08:10 a.m., another earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 5.8.
"BMKG continues to monitor the development of seismic activity in the area and will provide updated information if there are significant changes," he said.
Daryono urged residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable news. "The residents are expected to remain vigilant and follow official information from BMKG," he added.
