TEMPO.CO, Medan - The panel of judges at the Medan District Court sentenced Hendrik Kosumo, 41, the owner of a homemade ecstasy factory on Jalan Kapten Jumhana, Medanarea District, Medan City, to death penalty.

The judges found the defendant guilty of producing, importing, exporting, or distributing category one narcotics in a form other than plants weighing more than five grams.

The defendant's actions violated Article 113 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics, as stated in the second alternative indictment.

"The panel of judges decided on the death penalty for the defendant Hendrik Kosumo," said the chairperson of the panel of judges, Nani Sukmawati, during the trial on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

In addition to Hendrik, the panel of judges also handed down varied sentences to four other defendants. Muhammad Syahrul Savawi alias Dodi (43) was sentenced to life imprisonment for being responsible for the procurement of printing equipment and the marketing of ecstasy.

The three other defendants, Arpen Tua Purba (29), Hilda Dame Ulina Pangaribuan (36), and Debby Kent (36), the wife of the defendant Hendrik Kosumo, were each sentenced to 20 years in prison.

"The defendants have been proven guilty of violating Article 114 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics," said Nani. "Aggravating the defendants' actions is causing public unrest and not supporting the government's program in combating drugs. There are no mitigating circumstances."

After reading the verdict, the panel of judges gave the defendants and the prosecutors from the Medan State Attorney's Office (Kejari) a week to declare their stance, whether to appeal or accept the court's decision.

Prior to this, Public Prosecutor Rizqi Darmawan demanded the death penalty for the defendants Hendrik Kosumo and Syahrul Savawi alias Dodi, citing their violation of Article 113 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics, as in the second alternative indictment.

The other three defendants, Arpen Tua Purba, Hilda Dame Ulina Pangaribuan, and Debby Kent, were demanded life imprisonment for their conviction under Article 114 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning narcotics.

The indictment mentioned that the case started on June 11, 2024, when the National Police's Drug Crime Investigation Unit and the North Sumatra Regional Police raided a shop house used as an ecstasy pill production site.

"Evidence seized included ecstasy printing equipment, 8.96 kilograms of solid chemicals, 218.5 liters of liquid chemicals, 532.92 grams of mephedrone powder, various precursor chemicals, and laboratory equipment, as well as 635 ecstasy pills," said Rizqi.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the factory had been operating for six months, marketing its products to nightclubs in North Sumatra, including one in the city of Pematangsiantar. The husband and wife, Hendrik and Debby, were the owners and operators of the factory. Syahrul provided the printing equipment and handled the marketing.

"Hilda placed the orders for ecstasy, and Arpen was the pill courier," he added.
