TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government strongly condemns an Israeli military attack in Lebanon that resulted in injuries to two Indonesian soldiers serving as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said she has communicated with the Commander of the Garuda Force Headquarters Support Unit and called for a thorough investigation.
“The Indonesian government strongly condemns the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) attack in South Lebanon that injured two Indonesian UN peacekeeping personnel,” Retno said in a written statement on Friday, October 11, 2024.
She stressed that the attack was a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1701, which mandates the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and the deployment of UNIFIL to maintain peace and security in the region.
“Indonesia called on all parties to ensure that the inviolability of UN territory is respected at all times and under all circumstances,” the minister remarked.
Retno said that the Indonesian government urged an investigation into the attack and the perpetrators to be held accountable.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 10, 2024, during a shootout between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah in the Naquora Observation Tower in Southern Lebanon. Two Indonesian soldiers were caught in the crossfire and sustained minor injuries.
UNIFIL has also released a chronology of the events on Friday, October 11, 2024, confirming that the Israeli army attacked the UNIFIL headquarters in Naquora and surrounding areas. The attack resulted in damage to UNIFIL's infrastructure, including vehicles and communication systems.
UNIFIL has confirmed that the injuries sustained by the two soldiers are not serious and that they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Approximately 1,000 Indonesian soldiers are serving as part of UNIFIL and are deployed across various units and locations in Lebanon. Their roles include maritime operations, land-based peacekeeping, and humanitarian assistance.
