5 Health Benefits of Taro Root, Good for Weight Loss

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTaro is a type of root vegetable with a brown outer skin and white, starchy flesh. It is often described as having a slightly sweet flavor with a potato-like texture.

This root vegetable is considered a staple food in several parts of the world, including Asia, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and other Pacific islands. It is prepared in a variety of ways, often as a savory dish or dessert.

However, taro root is more than just a product found in Asian markets. It offers several health benefits as it is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Read on to learn more about the benefits of taro root.

Health Benefits of Taro Root

1. Supports digestive health

Taro root is a great source of fiber. WebMD notes that taro has twice the fiber of potatoes. Not to mention, it is also a resistant starch that supports your digestive system.

In fact, a study conducted on pigs shows that consuming resistant starches can improve colon health by increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids and reducing damage to colon cells, Healthline explains.

The same goes for fiber, which is essential for better digestive function and can relieve constipation, diarrhea, or acid reflux.

2. Helps manage blood sugar

High blood sugar levels, if left untreated, can lead to some potentially fatal health problems, including permanent damage to nerves in the hands and feet or vision problems. You can avoid this by eating high-fiber foods like taro root.

According to Healthline, the human body cannot absorb fiber, so it does not affect blood sugar levels. Fiber also helps prevent blood sugar spikes by slowing down the digestion and absorption of other carbohydrates.

3. Reduces the risk of heart disease

In addition to fiber, taro root is packed with essential minerals, especially potassium with 18 percent of the daily value. This mineral can help control high blood pressure by breaking down excess salt.

Regulated blood pressure means less stress on the cardiovascular system, which ultimately minimizes the risk of chronic heart disease.

4. Helps you lose weight

For those looking to manage their weight, taro is an excellent addition to your diet. It is high in fiber, which helps you feel fuller for longer periods. Ultimately, this state will prevent you from overeating, which will reduce calorie intake and lead to weight loss.

5. Reduces the risk of cancer

Did you know that taro root can reduce the risk of cancer? Healthline explains that taro contains quercetin, a type of polyphenol that may help lower the risk of cancer. Quercetin, one study shows, can trigger cancer cell death and prevent several types of cancer from growing.

This little root vegetable turns out to have many health benefits, including promoting a healthier heart and even helping with weight loss. You can also read about some healthy dairy products to improve your diet.
