TEMPO.CO, JakartaAuthorities continue searching for the victim of a vessel crash in the waters bordering Batam and Singapore today, Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The joint Sear and Rescue team also involves Singapore’s Police Operations Command Center (POCC).

The incident occurred when a traditional fisher Muchammad Johari, 33, sailed in the Batam-Singapore borders in the early hours of Saturday, August 31. A high-speed craft allegedly crashed into Johari’s ship at around 04:00 a.m. Jakarta time, causing the man to fall into the waters.

At midday on Saturday, the Belakang Padang Police Chief reported the incident to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas). Witnesses and the victim’s family tried to search for the victim to no avail.

The incident occurred exactly at the waters bordering Batam and Singapore at 1° 8'26.34"N 103°43'3.90"E". “There were no results until the third day of the search on Monday. We are planning to continue the search on Tuesday,” said the head of Tanjungpinang Basarnas, Slamet Riyadi, through the Public Relations of Tanjungpinang SAR office, Ardila Azizi, in a written statement on Monday.

The SAR team traces several locations to search for the victim, including the waters of Kapal Besar Island, Kujam Island, Kasu Island, and Tanjung Mongkol. The SAR team also corresponds with the Singapore POCC, but the Singaporean authorities also have yet to find Johari.

A similar incident previously befell a Bengkong fisher named Asril in Batam. The traditional fisher was found dead after falling into the water after a high-speed craft allegedly crashed into his ship.

Batam waters are often called dark waters. High-speed crafts often pass through the waters to smuggle illegal goods.
