The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. The Relations Between Shopee, Garena, and Kaesang Pangarep: Private Jet and Alleged Gratification
The Indonesian public recently spotlighted the link between the subsidiaries of SEA Limited, Shopee, and Garena, to President Jokowi's youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, and his wife, Erina Gudono. This occurred after Indonesians suspected that the Gulfstream private jet that Kaesang and Erina boarded to the United States belonged to Garena Online (Private) Limited.
This prompted the Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Community (MAKI), Boyamin Saiman, to report Kaesang to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for alleged gratification. Bonyamin submitted the complaint through KPK’s public complaint channel on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
2. Palace Denies Allegation of Jokowi Thwarting Anies Baswedan in 2024 Regional Elections
The President's Special Staff Coordinator, Ari Dwipayana, emphatically denied allegations that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo played a role in preventing Anies Baswedan from advancing in the 2024 Regional Elections. He asserted that the nomination process for regional heads and deputy regional heads is solely the purview of political parties or coalitions of political parties.
“Internal party decisions should not be linked to the president,” Ari told Tempo via a text message on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Ari stressed that each party has its own internal mechanisms for making nomination decisions and possesses the autonomy to determine its candidates.
3. Netizens Criticize Jokowi's 'Doorstop Interview'
In recent weeks, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has conducted two press statements at the Presidential Office Complex, Jakarta, in the form of "doorstop interviews". However, these interviews were allegedly staged since no actual journalists were involved.
The first statement, on August 21, 2024, addressed the Constitutional Court's ruling on the regional head candidacy threshold and age requirements. The second statement, on August 27, 2024, concerned the demonstration against the ratification of the Regional Election Law revision.
