TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s visit to Tasikmalaya, West Java, on Thursday, August 29, dozens of security personnel reportedly suffered from food poisoning during a roll call ceremony in the city square on Wednesday, August 28.
Approximately 500 security personnel, including soldiers from the III/Siliwangi Military Command, National Police officers, and other agencies, attended the ceremony to prepare for the president’s visit.
The incident took place after the participants consumed a meal consisting of yellow rice, eggs, perkedel, chili sauce, and cucumber slices. Symptoms such as vomiting, weakness, dizziness, and nausea began to appear around noon local time. Many were rushed to the Banjar City Regional Hospital and the Mitra Idaman Hospital in Banjar City for medical attention.
According to Colonel Inf. Davy Darma Putra, head of information for the III/Siliwangi Military Command, approximately 49 individuals were affected by the food poisoning. He confirmed that the victims were receiving treatment.
“15 of the 49 personnel are military soldiers. Their condition is improving,” he said as reported by Antara.
The Siliwangi Military Command has initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident, which is being handled by the police. The Presidential Palace is also closely monitoring the investigation process and coordinating with relevant authorities.
Deputy for Protocol and Media of the Secretariat, Yusuf Permana, stated that the palace is still gathering information regarding the incident and its potential causes. “For now, it is suspected to be caused by food poisoning,” Yusuf told Tempo on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
The office is also focusing on the well-being of the affected security personnel and expressed gratitude for their efforts in securing the President's working visit to West Java.
During the visit, President Jokowi inaugurated the Leuwikeris Dam, a national strategic project located between Ciamis Regency and Tasikmalaya Regency. The dam was constructed at Rp3.5 trillion.
