TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of Asia-Pacific and African Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdul Kadir Jailani, together with the Secretary of the Directorate General of Defense Strategy of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Oktaheroe Ramsi, co-chaired the First Senior Officials Meeting of Indonesia-China Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue (2+2 SOM) on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
"This meeting marks a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China. For the first time, we have held a joint dialogue to enhance cooperation in politics, defense, and security," Jailani said, as quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
Jailani further mentioned that the 2+2 SOM serves as a preparatory step for the Ministerial-level Dialogue, anticipated to take place in 2025.
In the meeting held in Jakarta on August 13, the Chinese Delegation was led by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Deputy Chief of the Office for International Military Cooperation of the Chinese Central Military Commission Major General Zhang Baoqun.
The discussions led to an agreement on capacity development cooperation for diplomats and joint military training between the two nations. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation to maintain regional security and stability, prevent terrorism, and address transnational crimes.
The Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue (2+2) stems from the MoU agreed upon during President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's visit to Beijing in October 2023. The 2+2 at the Ministerial level in 2025 will be a part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-China diplomatic relations, which have been established since April 13, 1950.
