TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sport climbing athlete Veddriq Leonardo secured Indonesia’s first gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics today after becoming the fastest in the men’s speed event.
Veddriq Leonardo started today's match by competing in the quarter-final against French athlete Bassa Mawem with a record time of 4.88 seconds. The Pontianak athlete advanced to the semifinals after Basa Mawem finished with a slower 5.26 seconds.
After a short break, Veddriq faced Iran athlete Reza Alipour Shenazandifard who qualified for the semifinals after defeating Amir Maimuratov from Kazakhstan.
The Indonesian representative finally advanced to the finals after winning a narrow victory over Reza Alipour Shenazandifard. Veddriq, who climbed again from Lane A, finished with a time of 4.78 seconds, 0.06 seconds ahead of the Iranian athlete.
In the finals, Veddriq faced Chinese representative Wu Peng who previously defeated United States’ Sam Watson.
Veddriq Leonardo, who this time climbed from Lane B, dashed to victory with a record time of 4.75 seconds, 0.02 seconds ahead of Wu Peng.
The gold medal Veddriq won leaves a sweet note for Indonesia as it’s the country’s first gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Veddriq’s victory also made history as Indonesia’s first-ever gold for sport climbing at the Olympics.
