TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and former Indonesian president Megawati Soekarnoputri supports Kamala Harris' candidacy in the United States presidential election to replace Joe Biden from the US Democratic Party.
"It’s temporary and hasn’t been decided yet. But I like Mrs. Kamala Harris. Come on, ladies, support her," said Megawati while attending the National Working Conference of the Perindo Party at the iNews Tower, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
Megawati revealed that she sent a letter of support to Kamala. In the letter, Megawati went on, was a prayer for Kamala to win.
"I’ve sent her a letter. I wrote (to her) that I support this. I’m ecstatic if you (Kamala Harris) become a president so I don’t feel lonely,” said Indonesia's first female president.
Megawati also criticized the previous US election that met incumbent Joe Biden with former US President Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
"I laughed at the fact that the United States is considered a superpower but doesn’t have a regeneration for its (presidential) candidates," she said.
Kamala Harris, who currently holds the seat of Vice President of the United States, replaces Joe Biden who withdrew from the US Presidential Election.
The woman who was born in Oakland, California in 1964 served as the District Attorney of San Francisco and the Attorney General of California, before becoming a Senator in the US Parliament.
Harris was elected to the US Senate in 2016 and inaugurated in 2017. She took the seat vacated by Senator Barbara Boxer. In 2019, Harris served on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary and the Select Committee on Intelligence.
President Biden fully backed Kamala Harris' candidacy. "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.," Biden wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
