Southeast Asian Nations Lag Behind in Early Paris Olympics Medal Tally

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe 2024 Paris Olympics, featuring 10,672 athletes from 196 countries, is currently underway. As of July 29, 2024, competition for top spots remains fierce.

Japan and Australia have emerged as early leaders, each securing four gold medals. Japan's recent victories include fencing and skateboarding, while Australia awaits further medal opportunities.

Following closely behind are the United States, France, South Korea, and China, each with three gold medals. Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, have yet to claim a gold medal in the first two days of competition.

The third day of the Olympics promised thrilling contests, with 19 gold medals up for grabs. Swimming events, including the women's 200-meter freestyle featuring rising star Summer McIntosh from Canada, were highly anticipated. 

Diving also captivated audiences, with defending champion Tom Daley from Canada aiming to retain his title in the men's 10-meter platform. Additionally, the all-around team gymnastics competition between defending champion Japan and China was a major draw.

According to Antara news agency, a strong medal count is often seen as a reflection of a nation's sporting prowess and effective sports management. Quoted from the Paris 2024 Olympics page, China currently leads the medal tally with nine medals, followed by Japan (8 medals), Korea (7 medals), Australia (6 medals), United States (12 medals), France (9 medals), the UK (6 medals), Italy (6 medals), Kazakhstan (3 medals), Belgium (2 medals), Sweden (3 medals), Brazil (3 medals), Canada (3 medals). 

Others such as Germany, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Fiji, Kosovo, Mongolia, Poland, Tunisia, Croatia, Egypt, Spain, Hungary, India, the Republic of Moldova, Mexico, South Africa, and Switzerland have secured only one gold medal each.

In contrast, Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries have yet to secure a medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
